“Youths unemployment rate is on the increased, we need money to salvage this situation”—Youths Minister begs Finance Ministry for more money

Mohamed Orman Bangura has begged and pleaded to the Ministry of Finance (MoF) to allocate more money to his ministry so that they can address the high unemployment rate of young people in the country.

In a bid to address the unemployment rate of youths in the country, the Minister of Youths Affairs, Mohamed Orman Bangura has begged and pleaded to the Ministry of Finance (MoF) to allocate more money to his ministry so that they can address the high unemployment rate of young people in the country. Accredited to him “the youth unemployment rate is on the high increase, we need more money to salvage this situation”. He made this plead on Wednesday 5 October at the ongoing Budget Hearings and Discussions while presenting Le 9,834.9 (Old Leones) to MoF for the 2023 Fiscal Year (FY)

According to the Youths Minister, from January to August, his ministry received Le 4 Billion (Old Leones) out of the total Le 19 Billion (Old Leones) that was allocated to them, stating that addressing the high rate of youths unemployment MoF needs to consider the budget presented to them serious considerations.

Speaking on their deliverables and achievements for 2022, the Youth Minister highlighted some of their achievements. He said for 2022,  youth in agriculture project, they established 84 production centers with Rice dryers and Rice Mill Machines in the 14 Agricultural District, established 28 Youth Agricultural Cooperative, and also established 28 Car Wash Centers in 14 districts.

He continued that with support from UNDP, he said 126 motorbikes were procured and distributed to District Youth Councils and Chiefdom Youth Councils, adding that inadequate funds to implement project activities, untimely disbursement of funds, office space and poor coordination with line ministries are among their key challenges.

“For our 2023 FY, elections non-violence and substance abuse campaign, operationalize national youth empowerment fund, construct 22 car wash centers, construct 100 fishing boats with ultra-modern accessories, support 192 chiefdom youth farms and mid-term review of the national youth policy 2020-2025” he highlighted.
